Unapologetically Black

AUTHOR: Anonymous

It's 2020 and its not uncommon for a mother to watch her son become a hashtag because he's black

But the media won't mention that he was much more than that

Maybe that's why It's 2019 and it makes some uncomfortable that I am blacker than 12 AM during a waxing crescent moon

But God made me bright enough to illuminate rooms

It's 2019 and technically lynching was outlawed in 1968

But we only modernized the name

Though he didn't hang

Systemic lynching is still the same

Some have the nerve to say that one should protest in silence

But the silence isn't heard and that's why there's been riots and violence

It's hard not to make any noise when your people are dying

That's why I won't apologize that I am blacker than the americano that you drank this morning, without even trying

It's 2020 and I won't apologize that I am black enough that it makes some people afraid

I wish some could understand that God made me this way

It's 2020, but it was 2014 when Eric Garner said he couldn't breathe

And just because he's black, for his life he had to plead

It was 2015 when Sandra bland took a stand

Say her name

Cause she didn't leave her jail cell alive

Another sad way that one of my people have died

It was 2012 when Trayvon Martin went to get skittles and tea

But I guess since he is black he couldn't have that luxury

That's why I won't apologize that I am blacker than the soles of your shoes

But the dirt doesn't equate to my worth

I think some forgot that we tread the same earth

and that's why my people are hurt

and that's why we just want justice to be served

and that's why

I am unapologetically black
